This Would Have Resulted In Not Only The Resurrection Of Leary's Capt

The Amazing Spider-Man 3 never got off the ground, but with the huge surge in love that Andrew Garfield's Spider-Man has received, it would look quite different if it were to actually proceed. After the mixed reception to The Amazing Spider-Man 2, Garfield's superhero career looked to have been cut short. However, his triumphant return to the role in Spider-Man: No Way Home has paved the way for a future that, while undoubtedly different from what Sony had originally intended, may yet prove to be extremely successful.

Following the cancellation of Sam Raimi's Spider-Man 4, Sony elected to reboot the Spider-Man series with 2012's The Amazing Spider-Man, with Andrew Garfield becoming the new Peter Parker. While Sony had big plans for the Spider-Man franchise, The Amazing Spider-Man 2's polarized reception and (comparative) box office downturn led to Spidey rebooting again in the MCU, with Tom Holland taking on the role. Spider-Man: No Way Home has changed the game for Spidey once more, with both Tobey Maguire and Andrew Garfield's versions of Peter Parker appearing and the three teaming up to set things right in the Multiverse after villains from other universes are transported into the MCU. The chemistry of Maguire, Garfield, and Holland's Spider-Man trifecta has seen widespread praise, while Garfield's return, in particular, has also generated great enthusiasm in his potentially re-started Spider-Man future.

Fans have taken to social media to advocate for Sony to move ahead with The Amazing Spider-Man 3, using the hashtag #MakeTASM3. However, it's worth bearing in mind that No Way Home has significantly changed the trajectory of Garfield's Spider-Man story from where it was originally headed. Here's what the plans originally were for The Amazing Spider-Man 3, and how the movie would be different if it were to be made following No Way Home.

What Is Known About Sony's Original Amazing Spider-Man 3 Plans

The Amazing Spider-Man 2 left Peter having to learn to move on from tragedy after the death of Gwen Stacy (Emma Stone), while The Amazing Spider-Man 3 was seemingly going to take him on a radically different journey. Per an IGN interview with Denis Leary, Peter was going to learn to use Oscorp's formula as a tool to bring people back from the dead. This would have resulted in not only the resurrection of Leary's Capt. George Stacy, but also that of Peter's father Richard (Campbell Scott) and Norman Osborn (Chris Cooper). Norman's return would also factor into Sony's aspirations for their Spider-Verse plans at the time,

Part of Sony's endgame was a Sinister Six movie, which The Amazing Spider-Man 2 helped set up with teases or minor roles for villains like Doctor Octopus, the Vulture, and the Rhino (Paul Giamatti). Cooper's revived Norman Osborn was also intended as the leader of the Sinister Six, as revealed by director Marc Webb, while Felicity Jones' Felicia Hardy would also have fully developed into Black Cat in Sony's plans (Black Cat existing in Sony's current Marvel films). Sony's Spider-Man plans were certainly ambitious, but while Garfield's role in No Way Home opens the door for his Spidey future to continue, it would also look quite different should that happen.

How No Way Home Changes A Potential Amazing Spider-Man 3

Garfield's Peter Parker, like Tobey Maguire's, was working as a solo superhero before his appearance in No Way Home, which is even the source of a joke when the two have no idea what the Avengers that Holland's Peter is affiliated with are. If The Amazing Spider-Man 3 were to be greenlit, it would be Garfield's fourth time in the role rather than his third, and would be following on his discovery of the Multiverse and meeting other versions of himself. This can't help but greatly impact the perspective of Garfield's Web-Slinger in both personal and heroic terms.

Furthermore, Garfield's Spidey (or "Peter-Three", as the trio call him) entered the MCU as a man broken on the inside. As he explains, Gwen's death left Garfield's version of Peter scarred and angry, primarily at himself with Peter shouldering tremendous personal guilt for being unable to save her. This made him a more aggressive Wall-Crawler and he sees a chance to stop Holland's Spider-Man from traveling down the same path. However, he manages to heal himself in No Way Home not just by meeting two other Spider-Men, but also curing Dr. Curt Connors from being the Lizard (Rhys Ifans) for a second time and redeeming Max Dillon a.k.a. Electro (Jamie Foxx). Additionally, Peter realizes that he's not the failure of a hero he thought he was when he catches the falling MJ (Zendaya), and all these elements would be essential in building where Peter's heart and mind would be in a contemporary version of The Amazing Spider-Man 3.

How An Amazing Spider-Man 3 Could Be Scripted Now

With Peter just returning from meeting other Spider-Men while transported into the MCU, his old wounds have healed to a large extent. Still, his past since The Amazing Spider-Man 2 is still relevant, and specifically the time where Peter "stopped pulling my punches" and became "bitter", as he explains in No Way Home. This means that the world-building seen during Peter's battle with Electro in The Amazing Spider-Man 2 would almost certainly take a backseat altogether for recapping how much harsher Peter was between that film and No Way Home and how Peter is now back to his old self after his Multiverse experience.

That wouldn't necessarily mean that Sony's original plans for Spider-Man would need to be discarded altogether, but could instead be modified. Since Spidey's entry into the MCU, Sony has gotten multiple villain-centered Marvel movies up and running with the Jared Leto-led Morbius, the in-development Kraven the Hunter, and especially the Venom movies. These could provide the basis for Spidey villains for Garfield's Peter Parker to potentially meet if The Amazing Spider-Man 3 were revived. Tom Hardy's Venom in particular would be an especially enticing choice after the end credits scene of Venom: Let There Be Carnage.

The Multiverse shown in No Way Home and the meeting of three different versions of Spider-Man opens many possibilities for Sony-Marvel films not set within the MCU. Only time will tell if Sony decides that The Amazing Spider-Man 3 is an endeavor they feel should be pursued. However, after Andrew Garfield's well-received return in Spider-Man: No Way Home, it could indicate that the unrealized superhero film has gotten a rare second chance, albeit while changing lanes from the road it was originally headed down.
