That Film Was Certainly No Blockbuster But It Did Well Enough

David Harbour says he called Ryan Reynolds for advice after Hellboy bombed at the box office. Harbour is best known for playing Chief Hopper on Netflix’s smash hit Stranger Things. But the veteran actor also knows about bombing after playing Hellboy in the 2019 reboot.

The Hellboy character was of course first brought to screens in 2004 with Ron Perlman in the role and Guillermo Del Toro behind the camera. That film was certainly no blockbuster but it did well enough to get a sequel in 2008’s Hellboy II: The Golden Army. Perlman and Del Toro may have wanted to return for Hellboy 3, but studio interest was not there and the franchise was put in mothballs. Hellboy then made what was to be a triumphant return in 2019 with Harbour taking over the lead role and Neil Marshall handling directorial duties. Unfortunately the Lionsgate film made just $55 million on a budget of $50 million, certifying it as a bomb.

Hellboy’s bombing was no doubt a low point in Harbour’s career. Indeed the actor recently talked about the bad experience of being in such a box office flop in an interview with GQ, and revealed turning to his acquaintance Reynolds for advice about how to cope. Reynolds of course knew all about bombing after starring in The Green Lantern, one of the most notorious comic book movie flops of all time. As Harbour recounted:

“I know [Reynolds] a little bit. I called him and I was like, ‘Hey man, I just need to know something. You know Green Lantern? Huge flop for you. What the f--k is that like, because I think I’m going to hit that right now. Am I gonna be okay? Am I gonna survive this?’”

The interview reveals no specifics about how Reynolds responded to being consulted in this way, but Harbour did say the Green Lantern star was “sweet” about it. Of course in the annals of movie flops, Green Lantern is somewhat more significant than Hellboy in a number of ways. Green Lantern for one thing was a much bigger-budget film, costing $200 million to Hellboy’s $50 million. The stakes were obviously higher for Green Lantern overall as well, as the film was expected to launch the Hal Jordan version of comic book character Green Lantern for DC, with an eye toward multiple movies. Instead of kicking off a run of DCEU Green Lantern projects, the film basically killed off any chance of a significant Green Lantern presence in DC’s plans for a good long while. Only now is Green Lantern getting a new look, with an HBO Max show reportedly in the works.

While it’s true that Green Lantern didn’t do Reynolds any favors when it bombed in 2011, the actor would be just fine thanks to his arrival in the later comic book movie franchise Deadpool. Indeed nowadays Green Lantern is seen as more a blip in Reynolds’ career than a significant set-back. Harbour for his part may have seen his movie career somewhat derailed by Hellboy flopping, but he did manage to bounce back quickly with a role in 2021’s Black Widow. And of course Harbour was back as Hopper in the just-aired Stranger Things season 4. Harbour may not have revealed exactly what Reynolds said to him during their talk in the wake of Hellboy bombing, but if Reynolds’ later career choices served as any kind of example, Harbour should have learned to just keep on plugging away until eventually finding his perfect movie role – just as Reynolds did with Deadpool.
