This Connection Also Means That The Evil Acts Committed

The post-credits scene of Eternals introduced one key object in Kit Harington’s Dane Whitman history: the Ebony Blade, and here’s what you need to know about it. With the Infinity Saga now over, the Marvel Cinematic Universe is moving forward with its Phase 4, which covers both TV shows and movies, and which is exploring new concepts and places from this extensive universe. Phase 4 is also introducing new characters, and the first team to join this new era are the Eternals, who changed the history of the MCU, and with them also came Dane Whitman.

Directed by ChloĆ© Zhao, Eternals introduced the title team, an alien race created by the Celestial Arishem and sent to Earth centuries ago to protect Earth from their evil counterparts, the Deviants, and who stayed to help humans progress, though they weren’t allowed to interfere in their conflicts. The team is formed by Sersi (Gemma Chan), Ikaris (Richard Madden), Sprite (Lia McHugh), Kingo (Kumail Nanjiani), Phastos (Brian Tyree Henry), Makkari (Lauren Ridloff), Druig (Barry Keoghan), Gilgamesh (Don Lee), Thena (Angelina Jolie), and Ajak (Salma Hayek), but the story mostly focused on Sersi and her relationship with Ikaris. Sersi is the most empathetic of Marvel's Eternals team, and at the beginning of the movie, she was in a relationship with history professor Dane Whitman.

Where The Ebony Blade Will Reappear Next In The MCU

While Dane Whitman and his Black Knight persona don't have a solo MCU outing confirmed yet, there are plenty of places the character (and the Ebony Blade) could pop up next. First and foremost is the upcoming Disney+ show Moon Knight starring Oscar Isaac. Aside from the fact that Black Knight and Moon Knight are loosely similar characters, having been thrown into dark mystical situations largely beyond their control, Moon Knight will also be set at least partially in Dane Whitman's native London. Aside from the Moon Knight show, Black Knight and the Ebony Blade are also likely candidates for a Blade appearance, thanks to the link established between Dane and Blade in the Eternals post-credits scene. While the shared comic book history between Dane Whitman and Blade isn't extensive, the MCU certainly seems to be setting up a connection between the two, as Blade is the first person so far to interact with Dane as Black Knight (or a proto-Black Knight) rather than a regular person.

As for other possible appearances, the post-credits scenes of 2022's Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness and Thor: Love and Thunder could be likely places for the Ebony Blade to pop back up, especially since Doctor Strange, Valkyrie, and Black Knight have all spent time on the Defenders team in the Marvel Comics. Finally, Black Knight's MCU return could also happen in the Secret Invasion show since he participated in the comic book version of this story arc.

How Powerful Dane Whitman's Ebony Blade Is

Thanks to Merlin using his magic to empower it, the Ebony Blade has very specific powers that make it both an intriguing and dangerous weapon. The Ebony Blade was forged as a dark counterpart to Excalibur and it carries a dark curse, as it feeds on the negative aspects of the user and also exacerbates these, making the sword and the wielder stronger. The Ebony Blade's powers also include deflecting most magical attacks and absorbing the energy directed at it; it can cut through all materials except enchanted ones and it’s indestructible; Merlin enchanted it so the wielder can be injured but not killed unless it’s with a weapon also made from the Starstone; the enchantment also makes it possible for the sword to resurrect its wielder as long as they are a member of King Arthur’s bloodline and are holding onto it when they die; and users can’t be injured by the blade.

There’s a connection between the wielder and the Ebony Blade that also grants them certain abilities. This link with the sword (which Dane Whitman will soon have) allows the user to be transported to the Ebony Blade's location through mystic ceremony or act of will, and if the sword chooses to, they can also telekinetically summon the blade to themselves or manipulate it from a distance. This connection also means that the evil acts committed by the wielder can taint the blade, and if too much blood is spilled, the sword will start craving blood and will induce the user to kill more. When the full power of the blade is unleashed, it encases its wielder in a suit of black armor, this coming from its dark essence, and it can also use some kind of magical power that allows it to open doorways between dimensions.

What The Ebony Blade Means For Dane Whitman's MCU Future

The Ebony Blade is key to Dane Whitman’s future in the MCU as it confirms his transformation into Black Knight, which fans were hoping for when Harington’s character was confirmed to be Whitman. Fans were hoping that Eternals would offer a more complete introduction of Kit Harrington as Black Knight or the beginnings of his transformation, and while it didn’t happen as they hoped, it did set up his future as this specific superhero. After seeing battles like the one in New York, Thanos’ snap, the Battle of Earth, and the attack of the Deviants, Dane is most likely convinced by now that if he can do anything to help save the world, he should do it, and the Ebony Blade is his ticket to that. Dane has now come into direct contact with the sword, so his transformation into Black Knight is about to begin.

This opens up many doors for Dane’s return in upcoming movies and TV shows in the MCU’s Phase 4 and beyond, particularly in Blade as the Daywalker was the one who asked him if he was sure of what he’s doing when he touched the sword. The Ebony Blade is going to be one of the most important objects and weapons in this new era in the MCU, and Dane Whitman is on his way to becoming a bigger character than he was in his debut in Eternals.
