He Did Share A Romantic Relationship With Sersi In The 1990s

Despite the fact that Black Knight (Kit Harrington) is barely in the Eternals trailer, it does look like he may be getting his comic book-accurate backstory. In the comics, Dane Whitman is the latest in a long line of swordsman who carried the Black Knight mantle and the enchanted weapon known as the Ebony Blade.

Right now, Kit Harrington’s character is one of the upcoming Marvel movie’s biggest mysteries. As the movie’s only confirmed human character and someone who isn’t actually a part of the Eternals team, it’s not altogether clear what his purpose is in the story. He did share a romantic relationship with Sersi in the 1990s that’s apparently being adapted to the big screen, but it’s likely that his role in Eternals (and the MCU as a whole) goes a lot deeper than just that. After all, Black Knight is a major Avengers character and is easily one of the important members of Earth’s Mightiest Heroes who hasn’t already been featured in the MCU. Plus, being played by the Game of Thrones alum further indicates that his character won’t be a minor one.

By only providing a brief glimpse at Dane Whitman, Eternals doesn’t go a long way to explaining what his story will be, but it does at least tease the inclusion of his backstory from Marvel Comics. In the trailer, knights on horseback could be seen carrying out a massacre. In another shot, Makkari (Lauren Ridloff) is shown reading books in a room full of historical treasures, such as a full suit of armor that clearly belonged to a British knight. Its presence in the movie as well as the scenes from the Middle Ages that Eternals will be incorporating Dane Whitman’s ancestral heritage from the comic books.

It was established decades ago that Black Knight is a descendant of Sir Percy of Scandia, who was a member of King Arthur’s Knights of the Round Table in Britain. He was Marvel’s original Black Knight and the owner of the cursed Ebony Blade, which has since been passed down to countless others in his family. It eventually fell into the hands of an Iron Man villain named Nathan Garrett, who then bequeathed it to Dane Whitman, whose comic story continued to draw him back into his family’s past and the sword’s ancient history connections.

It would seem that like the comic character, MCU’s Dane Whitman will be linked in some way with knights from the Middle Ages, possibly through his bloodline. That does make sense, considering that the Black Knight legacy is an integral part of his origin, and it’s hard to imagine his story working without it. What will be interesting to see is how it will be connected to Sersi and the other characters. It could be that Sir Percy – or perhaps a different Black Knight – received the Ebony Blade from one of the Eternals several centuries ago. If so, Dane’s research into the weapon and where it came from could be what causes their paths to cross in Eternals.
