Which Might Be All The More Frustrating Due To The Limited

Here's every character returning from the Mission: Impossible franchise confirmed to return for Mission: Impossible 7. When Tom Cruise's spy franchise began in 1996, it was a mildly successful series at first, but it has become one of the most popular blockbuster franchises in recent years. The rejuvenation of Mission: Impossible started in 2011 with Mission: Impossible - Ghost Protocol, which also served as the entry point for Christopher McQuarrie, who helped rewrite the fourth installment.

McQuarrie went on to direct Mission: Impossible - Rogue Nation and Mission: Impossible - Fallout and helped propel the stunts, overall story, and Ethan Hunt's character to new heights. He helped turn the franchise from a series of one-off adventures into a properly connected narrative. An overarching vision started to form, and McQuarrie is now working on the next two Mission: Impossible entries. Production on Mission: Impossible 7 was scheduled to begin in early 2020, but it was delayed due to coronavirus. As a result, Paramount was forced to delay the releases of Mission: Impossible 7 and Mission: Impossible 8 back a few months.

Fans of the Mission: Impossible franchise now have to wait even longer to see what McQuarrie and Cruise are planning, which might be all the more frustrating due to the limited amount of details known about Mission: Impossible 7 & 8. The upcoming sequels will introduce new characters played by Hayley Atwell, Nicholas Hoult, Pom Klementieff, and Shea Whigham, but they are also bringing back many familiar characters. This doesn't just include some of Mission: Impossible's biggest stars, though, as even some long-forgotten characters will return. Here's a complete rundown of those who will appear in Mission: Impossible 7.

Ethan Hunt (Tom Cruise)

Tom Cruise is returning once again as Ethan Hunt in Mission: Impossible 7. The Impossible Mission Force's expert agent has been the lead of the franchise from the very beginning and has starred in all six previous films. After barely surviving his fight with August Walker (Henry Cavill) in Mission: Impossible - Fallout and saving the world once again, Hunt was last seen reunited with Ilsa Faust (Rebecca Ferguson). This could put Hunt in a committed romantic relationship when Mission: Impossible 7 begins, something that hasn't happened since Mission: Impossible III. Neither Cruise or McQuarrie have provided many details on what challenges will face Hunt next, but he'll probably continue dealing with the threat of the Syndicate given their role in the last two films. Whatever enemy Hunt has to take down, it should continue McQuarrie's deconstruction of the character, while undoubtedly have him take part in death-defying stunts.

Benji Dunn (Simon Pegg)

Simon Pegg will appear as Benji Dunn in a fifth consecutive Mission: Impossible movie with his upcoming role in Mission: Impossible 7. Benji first met Ethan in Mission: Impossible III and quickly became an ally for the IMF agent. He is an expert hacker but has also trained to become a field agent. He's been put in danger on multiple occasions, especially at the hand of Solomon Lane (Sean Harris), but also has helped save the world. Details on Benji's role in Mission: Impossible 7 are still mostly under wraps, although McQuarrie has teased that he'll go through a similarly stressful story as Ethan did in Fallout. Perhaps this will lead to more of Benji's personal life and backstory being explored next.

Luther Stickell (Ving Rhames)

Ving Rhames is returning as Luther Stickell in Mission: Impossible 7 too. Rhames is one of the original stars of the entire franchise, as he debuted in the first installment. Luther was part of Ethan's team in Mission: Impossible and became one of the people he trusts the most. Rhames has appeared in every entry of the franchise since then, whether it was a cameo in Mission: Impossible III or being part of the central team again in Fallout. Knowing that he'll return for Mission: Impossible 7, Luther will be right by Ethan's side once more. As far as what he'll specifically be up to, that remains to be seen.

Ilsa Faust (Rebecca Ferguson)

Rebecca Ferguson will return as Ilsa Faust, a recent fan-favorite character, in Mission: Impossible 7 as well. The first appearance of Faust came in Mission: Impossible - Rogue Nation, where she was an enemy and then ally for Ethan. Ilsa is a former MI6 agent and spent time working with The Syndicate before that. Although she is not an IMF agent like Ethan, the two have worked together on multiple occasions now - and will do so again in Mission: Impossible 7. One difference that will come now is that Ilsa is not part of MI6 anymore, so she may be recruited to work with Ethan at the IMF. They have developed a bit of a romantic relationship, too, which could be further explored in the upcoming movies.

Alanna Mitsopolis (Vanessa Kirby)

Vanessa Kirby will also be back for Mission: Impossible 7 as Alanna Mitsopolis. As one of the most recent additions to the franchise, audiences first met Alanna in Mission: Impossible - Fallout. She primarily was referred to as the White Widow in the film and was associated with John Lark's plan at the beginning, before turning to help Ethan. Alanna arranged for the CIA to hand over Lane to MI6 at the end of the film, and her relationships with the CIA, IMF, and The Syndicate could be how she returns for Mission: Impossible 7. It's also possible that her return could help bring back other Mission: Impossible vets since Alanna is the daughter of Max (Vanessa Redgrave). Even though Max passed away sometime after her only appearance in the first film, flashbacks could be used to show the mother and daughter together potentially.

Eugene Kittridge (Henry Czerny)

The biggest surprise for Mission: Impossible 7 so far is the confirmation that Henry Czerny is returning as Eugene Kittridge. Czerny has only appeared in the first Mission: Impossible film, so he's been away from the franchise for over two decades. He was the leader of the IMF last time audiences saw him, but the organization has changed dramatically since then, with many other individuals taking charge. But, since the most recent IMF boss Alan Hundley (Alec Baldwin) died in Fallout, maybe Kittridge is returning to oversee Ethan's next adventures.

These are just the characters confirmed to return at this point, but more surprises might be in store. McQuarrie has stated that anyone who appeared in prior movies could return for Mission: Impossible 7, as even dead characters could return through flashbacks. There were even reports in 2019 that Baldwin and Cavill could return for the sequels as a result. With a handful of returnees already confirmed, hopefully some of the surprises will be maintained for the theater.
